Designed specifically for aviation, the watch broke new ground with its square case, bold Roman numerals, and leather strap, offering practicality and elegance for pilots. Its innovative design, created in 1904, remains one of Cartier’s most enduring and celebrated creations, embodying the spirit of exploration and modernity.
- In April 2020, Cartier introduced four limited-edition Santos-Dumont XL models, each paying tribute to one of Santos-Dumont’s most remarkable flying machines. Over a decade, the Franco-Brazilian aviator revolutionized aviation, designing and piloting various aircrafts, from balloons and dirigibles to heavier-than-air planes. These limited editions commemorate key milestones in his career, beginning with his first balloon, the Brésil of 1898, and culminating in the La Demoiselle plane of 1908. Each watch is powered by the ultra-thin 430 MC mechanical movement, housed in the elegant proportions of the Santos-Dumont XL case.
- The present example, “Le Brésil,” is named after Santos-Dumont’s first flying machine, a small and lightweight hot-air balloon that took flight in 1898. Crafted in platinum, as indicated by the ruby cabochon on the crown, the watch features a silvered, radially brushed dial with applied Roman numerals—a first for the Santos-Dumont, which traditionally featured printed dials. The numerals are paired with a black minute track and black sword-shaped hands, creating a striking contrast. Accompanied by its original accessories and preserved in excellent condition, this rare and elegant timepiece offers collectors a unique opportunity to own a watch that celebrates both Cartier’s design legacy and the pioneering spirit of Alberto Santos-Dumont.
