The 'Golden Ellipse' was officially unveiled in 1968 with References 3546 and 3548, and has since become emblematic to Patek Philippe's brand ethos. A true expression of Patek Philippe’s approach to watchmaking and design, the Ellipse is characterized by and named after its elliptical shape. The design was derived from the Golden Ratio, also known as the ‘divine proportion’, expressed as a ratio between two numbers of approximately 1.618. Studied by mathematicians for centuries, it is considered to be a key element in achieving aesthetic harmony in art and architecture. Our present timepiece is the Reference 3589 that was first launched in 1970, and is notable as the first Patek Philippe reference to utilize the automatic LeCoultre-based calibre 28-255, which was the best and thinnest automatic movement available at the time. It is this very calibre that will go on to power the first Nautilus Reference 3700 six years later. Crafted with a variety of case material and dial configurations, we are pleased to offer the present lot featuring a silvered dial with Roman numeral indices in its wonderfully preserved 18k white gold case.
