The Rolex reference 6062 is one of the brand’s most significant and coveted models, blending elegance, complexity, and sportiness. Unveiled in 1950 at the Basel Fair, it was one of only two Rolex watches to feature a triple calendar with a moon phase, alongside the reference 8171. Unlike the 8171, the 6062 featured a water-resistant Oyster case with a screw-down case back and Super-Oyster crown, making it one of the first water-resistant full-calendar wristwatches. Highly sought after by collectors, it is considered a true Rolex grail, balancing luxury, functionality, and innovation. While most examples were cased in yellow or pink gold, stainless steel variants are exceedingly rare and are regarded as the pinnacle of desirability. Without exaggeration, the present 6062 is unquestionably one of the finest stainless steel examples known to exist. During its production era, stainless steel wristwatches were considered everyday wear, making well-preserved examples rare. Priced lower than gold, they lacked the same prestige and were often heavily polished or corroded over time. Few survive in original condition, and when they do, they often break world records at auction. The example here offered is absolutely part of this extremely short list, still showing the engravings “Registered Design—Modele Depose”. What further enhances the appeal of this 6062 is the breathtaking dial configuration, featuring Arabic numerals at 3 and 9 o’clock, a silvered lacquer finish, and an ivory grené outer ring that creates an exceptional sense of depth and contrast. The moon phase dial at 6 o’clock, a defining feature of the reference, remains vibrant with its deep blue enamel and golden moon. The watch has been kept safely and keenly in a private collection after its appearing in Christie’s auction in 2009 and it still shows the same characteristics and quality of those years. Few watches ever made by Rolex or any other manufacturer exemplify in a better manner the key ingredients of a collector’s trophy such as the present one: rarity, looks, condition and, most importantly, the ability to be worn and appreciated by the discerning connoisseur.
