The Rolex reference 6238 known as the “Pre-Daytona,” holds a significant place in the evolution of Rolex chronographs. Produced from circa 1961 until 1967, this model is regarded as the predecessor to the iconic Daytona. One of the key differences between the 6238 and later Daytonas is the location of the tachymeter scale, which on the 6238 remains on the dial, whereas on subsequent models, it was moved to the bezel. This change marks a pivotal moment in Rolex’s design history, and as a result, the 6238 is highly sought after by collectors. The present specimen is an outstanding example of the reference 6238, both for its well-preserved condition and its rare and highly desirable features. The stainless steel three-body case retains its original proportions and crisp edges despite showing slight signs of wear, a testament to the careful use and preservation of the watch. Unlike later models, which bear “T Swiss T” or “Swiss – T<25” markings, these early tritium dials are marked simply with “Swiss” beneath the 6 o’clock position, adding to the watch’s rarity and historical importance. The present reference 6238 is a superb example of Rolex’s pre-Daytona chronographs.
