Model Explorer II Reference 1655 Case Material Stainless steel Bracelet Material Stainless steel Rolex bracelet, approximate length 195mm Year 1971 Movement Automatic, cal. 1570, 26 jewels Case N° 2'764'231 Dimensions 39mm Diameter Signed Case, dial and movement The Rolex Explorer II, reference 1655, was introduced in 1971 as a bold and innovative addition to the brand’s iconic Explorer line. Designed with adventurers and spelunkers in mind, this timepiece was engineered to be a practical companion for exploration in challenging environments. Its standout feature is the bright orange 24-hour hand, which not only provides a secondary time zone function but also aids in distinguishing between day and night—an invaluable feature for those exploring deep caves or polar regions where natural light is scarce. The Explorer II reference 1655 was produced until the mid-1980s, during which time five distinct “marks” of dial and two service dials (one with tritium and another with luminova) were introduced. The present example, fitted with a Mark I dial and bezel, belongs to one of the earliest iterations of this reference, with a serial number in the 2.7 million range, dating it to circa 1971 —the launch year of this model. The earliest examples, known as the Mark I, are particularly notable for their straight center seconds hand—a distinctive trait that collectors cherish. Its remarkable condition and historical significance make it a true gem for discerning collectors.
