What the brand ended up creating was beyond a step forward in mechanical watchmaking, but a never-before-seen mechanism, entirely new to even the world of haute horology. Three years after unveiling the first prototype and with each individual watch requiring one year to create, Greubel Forsey succeeded in their mission with the delivery of the first Quadruple Tourbillon in 2008. Supremely accurate with a tested deviation of less than 2.5 seconds per day on a power reserve of 50 hours, each watch contains a staggering 531 components, with 261 of those at work within the four tourbillon cages. Each of the four tourbillons is connected to the spherical differential, which averages each of the beat rates via a central pinion to obtain the most precise timing performance. In order for owners to fully grasp and appreciate the intricacies of the groundbreaking technology, Greubel Forsey also tasked themselves with allowing total visual access to all key mechanisms. Another unconventional approach was adopted for this, with the use of an asymmetric design to the dial with two tourbillons placed partially outside of the mainplate circumference. This places the system at the very periphery of the watch, allowing for cutout at 7 to 8 o’clock to allow viewers a rare lateral perspective of the tourbillons. The present watch is not only a behemoth of horological innovation, but also a visually impressive masterpiece that is sure to become one of the most technologically advanced wristwatches of any collection and is sure to excite connoisseurs who appreciate independent watchmaking, true haute horology and the pursuit of excellence.
